Acciona has registered three Oaxaca wind projects with the APX VCS Registry. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions Acciona’s Oaxaca wind projects have multiple social and environmental benefits.
The projects are all in line with Acciona’s principles of long-term positive contribution, mutual benefits and honest and transparent communication. Acciona aims to positively impact the communities’ basic rights and services and to promote sustainability through continued action. The projects do not include one-off activities but instead a sustained commitment and involvement with the community: new programs start each year to create real value-added in the region. Among others, the Oaxaca region has benefited from:
- Health care programs, including cervix uteri and prostate cancer prevention or unplanned pregnancy and HIV prevention actions.
- Education programs, including manufacturing of low power aerogenerators, scholarships programs for higher education, technical certificates in energy law or human training workshops.
- Programs to support sports, such as sports equipment donation or building of sports infrastructure
- Infrastructure programs, such as the creation of a Bioclimatic Community Center and investment in educational infrastructure
- Sustainability programs, such as reforestation programs or environmental education programs for children.
Consequently, Acciona’s programs in Oaxaca have led to social benefits for the people living in the surrounding area, especially regarding opportunities for employment and improvement of quality of life.
